Learning to play jazz guitar actually requires less theory than you might have been led to believe. Often, the key to understanding this music is in discovering how simple materials can be used to make complex-sounding music.
Through exploring repertoire, the material that exists within each tune and what lies under your fingers, you start to see how great "unschooled" musicians like Wes Montgomery made incredible sounding music.
Recently arrived in Auckland from the UK, I have played and taught professionally for the last 16 years. This has included performing extensively in the UK at jazz clubs and festivals (with my own bands and others), together with numerous gigs in Boston.
I have been fortunate enough to have studied with some truly inspirational world-renowned teachers, including Mick Goodrick, Hal Crook, David Tronzo, Richie Hart and Tim Miller, and I owe a huge debt to all of them in my approach to playing and teaching jazz.
Lessons cost $60 an hour, including all materials and an MP3 recording.
