Experiencing self-esteem from a vacated tooth space? We are here to help you! With one of the most popular options – a dental implant. A dental implant most often takes the form of a small, screw-shaped titanium post that replaces the root-part of a missing tooth. The surgical procedure used to place an implant is quite minor and routine. This procedure requires only local anaesthesia – in most cases. After a healing period of 3-4 months, the implant is covered with a ceramic crown which is custom-made to match your existing natural teeth. During this healing period the implant fuses to the bone surrounding it. Implants have a documented success rate of over 95%, which is significantly higher than any other tooth-replacement option, which is why this option is the most demanded and popular alternative for a missing tooth.
How does it work?
No more worrying about slipping teeth, you can feel confident that your smile will stay in place with dental implants. It also helps preserve bone. As previously mentioned, this treatment has the highest success rate, making it the best long-term investment for replacing a single missing tooth. An implant placement will not decay nor would it need root canal treatment – plus it feels just like your natural tooth before.
Book an appointment with the dentist for a consultation first, then upon the next appointment a minor surgical procedure will take place. With your preferred dentist, a dental implant is inserted directly into the jawbone in the space vacated by the missing tooth.
If you have more than one tooth missing, implants provide an ideal replacement mechanism. An implant for each missing tooth is not necessary. Instead, implant teeth can act as supports for fixed bridgework. For example, if you are missing three teeth in a row, we can place two implants, one on either side of the gap, and a crown in between which has no implant underneath. By doing so you won’t need to use any of your remaining natural teeth as bridge supports, which could possibly weaken your natural teeth over time and make them more susceptible to decay.
How do I maintain dental implants?
Two ways an implant can lose attachment to the bone and fail once it has successfully fused are;
• Poor oral hygiene excessive biting forces.
• Poor oral hygiene and/or a lack of regular professional scale and polish can lead to a destructive bacterial infection called peri-implantitis.
As always recommended by the dentist, flossing every night and brushing your teeth at least twice a day can prevent this. Excessive biting forces can come from either a habit of clenching or grinding your teeth at night, or you require more dental implants to handle the forces generated by your bite. Inquire with the dentist to receive the correct number of implants so this does not happen. If you have a record of grinding or clenching your teeth, a night guard is recommended to protect your dental implant(s) which is a service also available at our clinic. Implants are a great long-term investment in your smile, confidence and your well-being, so it’s best to protect your investment with excellent oral maintenance.
Unlike many other dental practices we provide a complete dental implant service,including tooth extraction, implant surgery, implant restoration and implant maintenance/reviews.This means that our patients can have all of their dental implant care completed with us,without the need to visit other practices.
