Recently, some of the team headed to Altura coffee for a workshop to become coffee connoisseurs. They learnt everything about coffee from where the beans come from and how they're roasted to the various flavour profiles and smells. The team finished with a tour of the roasting machinery and a cupping session where they smelt and slurped some coffee. Now we know who to go to for a good cup of joe! #sandfieldteam

Jesse Toms celebrates 10 years at Sandfield. Looking back, Jesse felt like he knew nothing googling about indexes the evening before his technical test for the developer role here. Leaning on experts within the business, Jesse was quickly brought up to scratch and has since worked on many logistics-related projects - moving raw materials, flowers, apples and now cars! Here are some of Jesse's highlights and nuggets of advice: Biggest learning in your years here? I’ve come a long way technically from when I started, but I would say my biggest learning is communication. I pride myself on being able to take complicated technical issues and explain them to someone in simple terms regardless of their background. What advice would you give to yourself 10 years ago? Don't be afraid to ask questions, even if you think they're silly - that's how you learn, and no one's got all the answers. Best part of work life here? The best part of work life here is having the flexibility to work the hours that you want, from the place that you want. We’ve also got a team of great people who are always happy to help if you need it. What has kept you at Sandfield all these years? Easy - people. Having a good boss and a bunch of mates around you makes all the difference. #sandfield #sandfieldteam

Michael Thomson joined Sandfield as an intern during his second and third year of University. Floating around different teams, Michael worked on a number of projects like On-Issue for Mainfreight and on Mainsale with Matthew Porter. Michael pursued his Post-Grad at The University of Auckland and returned to Sandfield’s Integration specialist unit, Crossfire Integration, to help the team complete the ACFS project. Although it was meant to be for the Summer break stint, Michael has been with the business over 10 years. Michael shares some of his career highlights during his time at Sandfield so far: Most memorable/epic Sandfield moment? When the Crossfire team made the move into the Wedge. It doesn’t sound like a big thing, but going from the third floor of Lot 3 which was packed with basically the whole company to the relatively small and quiet Wedge was a really cool moment I think. Even at the time I thought it was really damn awesome that the Crossfire team and Sandfield as a whole was growing such that we actually needed multiple offices, rather than being forced into two smaller office spaces on K-Road. Biggest learning in your years here? I think some of my biggest learning came in my first couple of years as full-time. Once we moved to our current office, I was sitting between Mustafa (A talented Data Scientist) and Jamie Gates, our old DBA. So I would often find myself asking them questions about things I was working on and things they were working on. I learned a lot about databases from Jamie and about mathematics and statistics from Mustafa. They inspired me to take a break from Sandfield and get my Post Graduate Diploma from the University of Auckland. I have learned a lot more since of course, but those early unstructured and ad-hoc discussions really kick-started my learning in general. What are you most proud of? I always have a feeling of pride when completing an implementation for a Crossfire client. But the ones that take the cake are the projects I have done with Linfox. I have set up so many EDI integrations for/with Linfox and developed a large number of custom functionality within crossfire specifically for Linfox that I am (mostly) proud of that I have truly lost count. Being one of their go-to people for EDI questions and assistance is another big point of pride for me.

Recently, some of the Sandfield team visited the sites of our longest customer, Mainfreight. The team are standing in front of the very first Mainfreight truck that started the company over 40 years ago. Sandfield and Mainfreight have worked together for over 30 years. With this visit our developers learnt about the operations of one of NZ's biggest supply chain and logistics companies and how our partnership withstands the test of time. At Sandfield, we're big on working with businesses that want to make an impact and have company values and culture that align with ours.
