Mōrena koutou! Last night, we had the privilege of hosting the AUT Law Students' Society (AUTLSS) x LexisNexis New Zealand Paper Presentation Final! A great job by competitions officer Kate O'Sullivan, supported by society president Saleha Abdul Rahman on host duties. Congratulations to Molly-Love Louise, who prevailed in a one point win over Annaliese Wadsworth, and will represent AUT at the Australian Law Students' Association champs in Hobart and our own New Zealand Law Students' Association champs at conference in Christchurch, both events later this year. Acknowledging our judges - our own deputy Dean of Law Mike French, and Trish Buckley-Andre' from LexisNexis. To sum up the judges' views on the presentations, according to Mike, "They were both extremely good presentations, very well researched, very well presented, arguments were structured very well, only one point separated the two students, and either of them would have been a real credit to AUT going forward." Likewise thanks to Simon Laracy and LexisNexis for their continuing support of our students and student development via the medium of this great competition. Ngā mihi nui. 🙏

Transitioning from partner to barrister and embracing AI in law After fifteen years as a litigator and over a decade as a director and partner at boutique law firm SD Legal, Dushan Delic has bid farewell to his role as a solicitor. Driven by a desire for independence, autonomy, and a deeper focus on his areas of expertise, Delic has struck out on his own to become a barrister — a move he describes as providing a “unique sense of accomplishment and satisfaction.” However, a solo journey is not always an easy one, and Delic says there have already been plenty of challenges to navigate. Read of the Month: "A spotlight on constructive dismissal claims" Written by Caroline (Caro) Rieger (Director), Grace Adeyinka (Solicitor), and with research undertaken by Amy Edwards (Law Clerk), Black Door Law for Employment Law Bulletin, No. 1 Issue 2024. Constructive dismissal is an often misunderstood concept in employment law. It is often misused to describe situations where an employee resigns or wishes to resign as a result of difficult circumstances in the workplace. However, constructive dismissal refers to a situation where, as a result of an employer’s action or inaction, an employee’s job or workplace becomes untenable, and they have no other option but to resign. Constructive dismissal claims are difficult to prove. The legal threshold for a constructive dismissal claim is significantly higher than other dismissal claims.
