A customer research initiative conducted last year as part of the Eastern Busway Alliance Customer Experience (CX) program highlighted the need for Auckland Transport and the project team to explore solutions that provide accurate, real-time information. Such solutions empower customers, offering certainty and aiding informed decision-making for their journeys. In response, #EasternBusway & Auckland Transport, tasked Smart City NZ to develop an innovative solution involving Smart Variable Message Signs (SmartVMS), which could display live travel times for different modes of transport. This is another industry first from Smart City, where travel times for both cars and various public transport options are presented side-by-side on mobile #SmartVMS, in real-time. Smart City NZ continues to pioneer the seamless integration of emerging #SmartCity technologies, demonstrating the ease with which these advancements can revolutionise the service value of existing solutions. 💡 🎉 We've recently completed another installation of our SmartBench 'Mini' into the Wellington Botanic Gardens. In a first for our capital #Wellington, a #NewZealand city and a children’s playground, the Botanic Garden has installed a SmartBench in the Children’s playground. The bench is an example of cutting-edge technology and design that is combined into a friendly bench to offer solar and USB charging. The innovative seat has been made possible by a generous donation by the Friends of the Wellington Botanic Garden. President of the Friends Mazz Scannell says, “Any opportunity to showcase science is a no-brainer for the Friends. The chance to contribute to the Children’s Garden by purchasing user-friendly modern future-thinking outdoor furniture was an added-bonus”. The benches are a practical way to demonstrate #sustainable technology and the Children's Garden is the perfect place for the bench. The opportunity to surround our young #tamariki with smart sustainable technology, that is easily accessible, means they will use the technology in a more informed and efficient way. It's amazing to think back on my days walking through these gardens while at Victoria University of Wellington, and now, years later, I get the chance to contribute and enhance the experience. In a pioneering move for New Zealand, Smart City NZ, along with our solutions partner SHAPE Technology has redefined the utility of the conventional mobile VMS. (VMS - Variable Message Sign). This service is an industry first in New Zealand and the latest innovation in our SmartTraf product suite, named SmartVMS, the system leverages a range of virtual transport data metrics. It enables us to track vehicle speeds and travel times in areas surrounding project sites without the requirement for any additional hardware. Strategically positioned SmartVMS then dynamically guide motorists in real-time to the quickest alternative routes through the construction corridor. Traditionally, road and traffic management contractors relayed delays to motorists merely through basic messages like 'road works ahead, consider alternative route.' We believed in a more effective approach — one that not only informs motorists about anticipated delays but also offers actionable insights into the best and most efficient detours. This not only enhances the motorist's experience but also lessens traffic through work zones, significantly improving the health and safety of our dedicated road workers.
