EYES AND EARS ON: Robert Farrell - Senior Editor & Outdoor Enthusiast How did you get into your profession? I grew up fascinated by watching behind-the-scenes special features on DVDs of movies being made and I was intrigued by how many people were on a set, each with a specific role. This led me to study Television Production at university in London, which in turn gave me the opportunity to work on the Olympics. This earned me enough money to go on a two year working holiday in Vancouver where I ran the gauntlet of shooting and editing wedding videos, and making low budget short films. It was during this time I realised sitting in a cushy edit suite pushing pixels around was a lot more my speed vs standing on my feet for 12 hours a day. 10 years later I’m still in the cushy editing suite and my passion for making work is at an all-time high. What do you strive for in your work? I strive to create work that's both challenging for myself and engaging for the audience. We consume so much content on a daily basis, 99% of it goes through our eyes and ears without much of a second thought. I’m interested in making videos that stick around for a bit longer - maybe they have a social message that makes you think about a subject you wouldn’t normally consider or maybe it’s a visual technique that makes people wonder ‘how did they pull that off?’ I think about some of the British ads I’d watch growing up and how I can still remember a shot or a sequence, these things were made to be ephemeral and sell a product, but they’re still influencing me to this day - that’s the kind of work I’m proud to produce. What do you like about the production industry here in NZ? There’s definitely an underdog/DIY ethos to the industry here, peripherally from the people in our orbit there’s definitely a sense of alternate thinking to get things done when the budgets aren’t big enough or more likely - the weather isn’t playing ball. I think there also isn’t as much of a tendency to gate-keep here and in my experience people have been more open to leaving the ladder behind them so to speak, though as a nation I feel like we could cut the tall-poppy shit back a little bit, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with celebrating the accomplishments of your peers. What’s your favourite E&E job you’ve worked on so far? Or fav on-set experience? One that stands out from the past couple of years is Steely Stan, not only was it a bit of a bonkers memorable concept but it was a fun edit incorporating some classic 60s western motifs into a contemporary rail safety ad, complete with a bevy of challenges when predictably - the weather didn’t play ball. More recently another job I really enjoyed working on was an ad for business cover insurance, which on the surface doesn’t sound exciting but behind the scenes it gave me my first opportunity to use 3D modelling software to create some fully digital 3D environments which I hope to do more of in the future. - Continued in comments
