Some great pointers from CERT NZ - there's often always a sharp increase in text messages and emails promising tax refunds at this time of year, identifying the real from the fake can be quite tricky at the best of times! 🤔
Have you recently received a text or email saying you're due a tax refund? Phishing messages are designed to look authentic and can be hard to detect. CERT NZ and Inland Revenue NZ recommend looking out for a few things that make it easy to tell the fake messages from the real ones. Where: If it’s an email, check that the part of the email after the @ is ‘ird.govt.nz.’ If it’s a text, check that it is from a 4-digit code. IRD will not send a message from a mobile phone or overseas number. What: If the message has a link in it, do not click it. IRD does not send links to your myIR account. How: IRD will address you by name and won’t put refund amounts in emails or texts. Find out more about spotting phishing scams 👉 https://lnkd.in/gW7ZjmFw

Scammers are tricking LastPass users into resetting their accounts on fake websites. Based on the company's investigation, the scammers initiate contact with LastPass customers by calling them from an '888' number. They assert that the customer's LastPass account has been accessed from a new device, prompting the customer to press “1” to authorize the access or “2” to deny it. If the recipient presses "2", they are informed that they will shortly receive a call from a customer representative to "close the ticket". Afterwards, the user gets another call from someone pretending to be a LastPass employee, often with an American accent. This person sends an email with a shortened link to reset the user's account. Clicking the link takes the user to "help-lastpass[.]com", a fake site designed to steal login details. If the user enters their master password there, the scammer tries to access the LastPass account, locking out the real user and taking control. If you or someone you know thinks you've been scammed, please report it to abuse@lastpass.com or reportphishing@apwg.org. Earlier this week, it was announced that the Department of Internal Affairs (DIA) had busted a text scam ring operating throughout New Zealand. They seized thousands of items, including SIM cards and cash, and arrested several people who will face charges. These scams aim to steal personal information, financial details, or money. One common scam pretends to be from NZ Post, asking for a fee to process a shipment. SecureSphere reports that text scams are still occurring, with two new cases reported last week. This is a reminder to stay vigilant and take extra precautions to protect yourself from falling victim to similar scams in the future. If you suspect that you or someone you know has received these text scams, we urge you to forward the scam text message (free of charge) to DIA by texting it to 7726. #scam #scamalert #cybersecurity #textscams #newzealand
