Our design team are regularly developing specifications for our customers that require Design for Manufacturability (DFM) principles to be applied, ensuring efficient and cost-effective production of their items is achieved. One element in this exercise is the detailing of cut blanks for folded sheet metal items. This requires consideration of the material type, thickness, and bend allowances. These are all governed by required minimum bend radii, tooling options, and equipment dimensions - ensuring manufacturing is efficient and cost-effective. Despite having five different press brakes in-house ranging from 1200mm up to 6000mm, offering flexibility for projects of varying size - it remains common for customers to independently develop their designs, using one of the many software packages available, resulting in flat-patterns that don't align with available tooling options. In such cases, collaboration between designers and customers is crucial to better determine design specifications within our manufacturing constraints and without wasting valuable engineering time or creating upset because of additional cost. Strategic placement of holes and cut-outs, along with attention to surface finish and assembly considerations contribute to the overall quality and functionality of the final product. We love powdercoating our metalwork - transforming dull, naked metal surfaces into vibrant, shiny finishes, using the magic of polyester thermosetting powder. As the powder is delicately sprinkled onto the metal, it behaves like a flock of butterflies, gracefully dancing and swirling around, guided by invisible forces. Each particle is magnetically drawn to the metal, clinging to it like a thousand tiny magnets finding their true north. But this is just the beginning of the process, as the coated metal is then placed into our oven, where the real transformation begins. As the coated metalwork basks in the oven's warmth, the powder starts to awaken. It's as if each particle is coming to life, stretching and reaching out to its neighbours, forming a unified bond. In this fiery crucible, the powder undergoes a metamorphosis, melting and flowing like molten lava, filling every nook and cranny of the metal's surface. This week we’re exploring the interesting world of Picture Perforated Metal – an attractive product often crafted for our architectural customers. Known by various names like Pic-perf, Pixelperf, Picture-perf, PerfArt, or simply Picture Perforation, this technique involves creating captivating images using a series of pixel-like holes in a metal panel. The magic truly unfolds with large installations, where the image reveals itself when viewed from a distance. Selecting the right image is key. High contrast images are needed, while abstract, or stylised images often yield the best results compared to photo realistic or real-life scenes. This afternoon we revisit late-2017 when ROBINSON CONSTRUCTION LIMITED successfully completed the construction of the three story WK Advisors and Accountants Building on the corner of Alfred Street & Grove Road in Blenheim. This includes a design derived by Charlie Nott of Nott Architects, featuring a classically styled accordion folded screen with variable pitching and graduated perforations. This suited the Property Owners, Roselli Family Trust who required a cost-effective façade with a bit of wow factor suitable for the corner location on State Highway 1. Fielden Metalworks manufactured this assembly from over fifty 3mm anodised aluminium panels that were quick and easy for the Robinson’s team to install. This continues today to provide WK staff with a comfortable sunscreen as they diligently work their accounting magic for the people of Marlborough. This afternoon we revisit mid-2021 when Cassidy Construction successfully wrapped up the construction of the three-story Mary Thomas Building at Rosmini College in Takapuna.   Guided by Eclipse Architecture, the project called for a durable perforated cladding for the stairways. Given the coastal setting, Fielden’s Tititea product was the natural choice. This unique cladding is perforated and corrugated from sturdy 1.6mm thick aluminium & powder coated to guarantee a long-lasting result in all environments. This product has proven popular for a number of projects that require a permeable cladding for both light and air, whilst being robust enough to take the knocks (we’ve even tested it to DIN 18032-3 for ball impact).
