Reputation is everything, and when your stock is down you want some chips in the bank with every stakeholder. Social media can be even more of a minefield than traditional media (who are at least trained to get both sides of the story), so every step you take needs to be well thought through. While SOSing an agency to help out when s%&t hits the fan is sometimes required, you can self-soothe by following this very straightforward advice from our very own sage, Mrs Gina Williams-Folau StopPress
Undertow Media
Public Relations and Communications Services
A PR & social media agency with all the connections, delivering clever campaigns and driving ROI for your brand.
About us
An ‘undertow’ is a strong pull in a different direction. To create it you must first know the way the flow runs, then forge a surprising new route. This is the way Undertow Media conducts its day-to-day business. While this is true and makes sense of our name, we know even one-man bands with no clients can say clever things. You’re here because you want to know we’re credible. While somewhat ironically we don’t like tooting our own horn, as a quick summary agency founder Greer Bland started the New Zealand business in 2013 after running the consumer division of a large Australian agency comprising 40 staff. Before she left to bring all she learnt back home, she had already signed up a number of clients who needed NZ support and knew her style. From there, she convinced businesses that had never had an on-the-ground agency to come on board. Many of these clients are still with us today. Long-standing senior team members Gina Williams and Hayley Urry were brought on board to steer the ship. Through their leadership, we’ve expanded our services to be the leader in influencer relations, copy that sings on social, smart news plays that get the 6pm slot, content that converts and events that are talked about for weeks. We’ve since built an almost faultless team of 13 professionals that have helped rally a gold standard in communications across every possible service we provide. Every day our epic team enters our Grey Lynn studio and showroom to tell stories and make hay for their clients. We compete against ourselves to be better every day.

As Outkast fans, we can't resist a 'cooler than a polar bear's toenails' reference. Helping orchestrate the new Ruakura depot for Freightways' Big Chill saw us go from one extreme to the other, with temps dipping from 28 degrees in the sun to a frosty -23 degrees inside the new digs. A brilliant addition to the Tainui Group Holdings Limited inland port creating 45 new jobs and a more efficient transport supply chain network. Congrats to everyone involved.
From 28 degrees in the Hamilton sun to -23 degrees in the Big Chill freezer - it’s great to finally cut the ribbon at our cool new facility at the Ruakura Superhub. Special thanks to her worship Mayor Paula Southgate, Fraser High and the whole whaanau at Tainui Group Holdings Limited for our celebration today. We enjoyed the words spoken about maintaining long relationships, caring for our communities and the whenua and we look forward to a prosperous future together. If failing to plan is planning to fail isn't Gina Williams-Folau motto, we don't know what is. Always with the forethought, here's her yuletide blessing to us all to get the jump on our 2024 plan on a page. 🤓

Finalists 🏆 Some would say it's a bit nuts to have sprung into action at the suggestion of a 10-year-old? 🥜 But's that's exactly the PR play that has us attending the Pressie Awards tonight as finalists for our work on the launch of Pic’s Peanut Butter Smunchy…a clever concoction that was sparked by 10 y/old superfan Maggie Mellors. When Maggie wrote to Pic Picot begging for a spread that was the perfect blend of smooth and crunchy, he decided to crunch on with the whacky and wonderful idea. Smunchy was born three months later with one promised customer and no stockists. Our campaign placing Maggie at the fore and tapping into the smooth vs crunchy debate saw the ultimate conversion - both supermarket networks a-knocking to stock the SKU. Team work really made this dream work, #TeamSmunchy all the way!!! 📣 Finalists Tickled pink that our meaningful project for Persolkelly and the 2023 Census has been named a finalist at the Commercial Communications Council Pressie Awards. Let’s be honest, filling out the five-yearly census doesn’t spin the wheels of many, particularly marginalised and migrant communities who so often have bigger things to worry about. How do we get people to care and ensure these communities don't miss out on resource and investment due to bias data? Bring in the heavyweights – literally. 🥊 🥊 🥊 Who better than former boxer and social commentator Dave “Brown Buttabean” Letele to impart what completing the census will actually do for under-served communities and encourage all Kiwis to get involved. Hats off to the incredible team that made it all come together. We turned something frankly mundane and tedious into an engaging media story with star power and feel-good factor. And the best thing is - we've already won, knowing we helped increase the completion rate from 82% to 90% at last count. 🥇 Dave Letele Venessa Blakely Koreen Letele Anja Cuskelly Wendy Hewson Amelia Collins GAICD Victoria Cooper-Smith Debs Sim (gone but not forgotten!) The floods at the start of the year had a huge impact on many Kiwis - not news to any of us - and our Kumara farmers lost their crops. Proper's Kumara Crisps are our No. 3 SKU, and we knew we had to do something to hold our space in store - for our farmers and our fans. Our ANZ Commercial Manager, Duncan had a plan, and we all made it happen — a Sweet Potato Switcharoo, made by our Proper team, properly in our Yarra Factory, instead. Find us in stores across New Zealand and Australia too. Our Kumara Crisps WILL return in April 2024! Marketing people are obsessed with youth, especially on social. But the stats don’t always stack, and swiping left on Gen X and Boomers seems to fly in the face of making money and keeping customers. Who can't wait for this to drop in NZ? The power is getting handed back to creators, with commissions on offer for selling the brands you use and love on the daily…all from in-app. This makes sense (or should that be cents!) for smaller creators and the big boys alike. Our advice? Don't sleep on it and get the house in order. Let us know your thoughts below. #TikTokShop #Trend #Shopper #Business #InfluencerMarketing #TikTokNZ #TikTokShop #SocialMediaMarketing #DigitalMarketing #SocialMediaManager #Marketing #MarketingNZ #DigitalMarketingNZ #MarketingManager #SocialMediaMarketing #MarketingAgency
