Preston’s marketing manager Tania Thomas says, “The reason Preston’s is so popular is largely due to the culture that exists within the company, that is they have a real passion for meat.
“Not only in ensuring we always provide quality meat but also providing helpful advice to customers on the best ways to prepare and serve different types of cuts, both for special occasions and your everyday meals.”
The business was originally founded over 110 years ago in Wellington by Arthur Edward Preston and since this time it has remained very much a family business. Quality and tradition continues to prevail, and Preston’s adopts a farm to fork management system to ensure best practises produce superior quality meat, full of flavour, tender and juicy.
Preston's Master Butchers is affiliated with Taylor Preston's, the Meat works in Ngauranga Gorge in Wellington which source stock from a network of farms around the region adhering to strict export grade standards. Quality control continues throughout the meat processing and product is selected for Preston’s prior to export grading, including Preston’s in Palmerston North. Tania says, “Preston’s prides itself on sourcing quality stock and only using top grade meat to sell in their retail outlets. Our customers get first off the chain and this standard of quality is well known to the many restaurants and cafes in the region who also purchase their meat and smallgoods through Preston’s.”
When the Palmerston North factory shop opened 30 years ago they employed 30 people and also produced the smallgoods on-site. Smallgoods are now produced in their own purpose built factory in Porirua. Palmerston North’s Preston’s Master Butchers currently employ 10 staff, including the butchers who prepare the cuts of meat for sale, and Tania says, “All our meat cuts are freshly prepared in the shop and our butchers will also prepare specific cuts to any customer requests.”
